School on Wheels’ Ignite Learning Works With Parents

Courtney King, Attorney

Courtney King practices labor and employment law as an associate attorney at Ice Miller, LLP, in Indianapolis, Indiana, handling both federal and state litigation. Outside of her work helping clients, attorney Courtney King supports her community as a volunteer tutor for School on Wheels.

Since 2001, School on Wheels in Indianapolis has been working to provide school-aged children with the academic tools to succeed and break the cycle of homelessness. By providing one-on-one tutoring and educational advocacy, the organization has served more than 350 children who are affected by homelessness. However, School on Wheels doesn’t only help children, it also works with the children’s parents through its Ignite Learning program.

Since parents play a huge role in their children’s academic success, Ignite Learning seeks to get parents actively engaged in their child’s education. The program teaches parents about their children's academic needs and offers workshops to help them better understand the educational system. Hoping to provide a more complete web of support for families and students, Ignite Learning partners with Tutors in Action, another School on Wheels program, as well as local shelters, service organizations, and schools in an effort to reach as many children as possible.
